Jaw pain, clicking, headaches, and facial tension have real, treatable causes — and physical therapy often gets to them when nothing else has.
TMJ disorders — dysfunction of the temporomandibular joint and surrounding structures — are more common than most people realize, and more treatable than most patients have been told. Chronic jaw pain, clicking, locking, and the headaches that often accompany them frequently respond very well to skilled physical therapy.

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) connects the lower jaw (mandible) to the skull just in front of the ear. It is one of the most-used joints in the body — involved in speaking, chewing, swallowing, and breathing. TMJ disorders (also called TMD) encompass dysfunction of the joint itself, the surrounding muscles, the articular disc, and the fascial system that connects the jaw to the neck, skull, and even the rest of the body.
TMJ pain is rarely isolated — it almost always involves the cervical spine, the suboccipital muscles, and fascial restrictions that extend well beyond the jaw itself. This is why a whole-system approach to evaluation and treatment is essential.
TMJ dysfunction commonly results from: articular disc displacement or degeneration, joint hypermobility or hypomobility, chronic muscle tension and bruxism (clenching/grinding), tight muscles and connective tissue in the jaw and head, neck problems that affect how the jaw moves, a misaligned bite, frequent dental work or orthodontic treatment, oral surgery (including wisdom teeth extraction), postural overload, or trauma.
Stress is a significant contributing factor — it drives jaw clenching and muscle holding patterns that load the TMJ chronically. This is why treatment that addresses only the joint without addressing the fascial system and contributing postural and stress-related factors rarely produces lasting results.
We’ll review your movement, identify limitations, and talk through your goals.
This gives us insight into your injury history, current training, equipment access, and lifestyle.
Your personalized plan is delivered through TrueCoach, with full support and adjustments along the way.
A thorough evaluation of the TMJ, cervical spine, posture, and fascial system — assessing jaw opening range, joint mobility, muscle tenderness, and contributing cervical and cranial factors. Treatment begins at the first visit in most cases.
We coordinate with your dentist or oral surgeon where appropriate to ensure our approach complements any dental management.
The specific care you need and deserve — all brought together under one practice, across three locations in La Crosse and Onalaska.
Yes — and often more effectively than a night guard or dental splint alone. Physical therapy addresses the underlying joint mechanics, muscle tension, fascial restrictions, and cervical contributions that drive TMJ symptoms. Many patients see significant relief within 4–6 visits.
Both have a role. Dentists manage bite, occlusion, and splint therapy. Physical therapists address joint mechanics, muscles, fascia, and the cervical spine. The two approaches are complementary — we communicate with your dental team where appropriate.
Many patients experience meaningful improvement in 4–8 sessions. Chronic or complex presentations may require more.
Yes — and they'll be an important part of your plan. Your therapist will provide specific jaw exercises, postural corrections, and self-management strategies based on your assessment findings.
Persistent jaw pain doesn't have to become your new normal. Our team will identify what's contributing to your symptoms and create a personalized treatment plan to help you eat, speak, yawn, and smile with greater comfort and confidence.
