Most low back pain has a real, identifiable cause — and a real, lasting solution. Let's find it.
Low back pain is the most common reason people seek physical therapy — and one of the most successfully treated. Yet too many people are told to rest, take anti-inflammatories, or 'learn to manage it.' We think you deserve more than that.
At Dynamic Performance and Therapy, we take the time to identify exactly what's driving your back pain — whether that's a disc, a joint, a muscle imbalance, nerve irritation, or a combination — and build a targeted plan to address it at the source.

Low back pain refers to pain, stiffness, or dysfunction in the lumbar spine region — the five vertebrae between the ribcage and pelvis. It can range from a dull, persistent ache to sharp, debilitating pain that limits your ability to sit, stand, walk, or sleep.
Low back pain is not a diagnosis in itself — it's a symptom. The diagnosis — what's actually causing it — is what determines how it should be treated. This is why a thorough clinical evaluation is the essential first step.
Low back pain most commonly stems from: lumbar disc herniation or bulge (pressing on a nerve root), facet joint irritation or degeneration, sacroiliac (SI) joint dysfunction, muscle strain or ligament sprain, spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal), piriformis syndrome, or poor movement mechanics placing repeated stress on the spine.
Contributing factors include prolonged sitting, poor posture, weak core and hip muscles, previous injury, and — critically — movement pattern dysfunction that puts uneven load on spinal structures over time.
Hands-on techniques to restore movement in restricted lumbar and sacroiliac joints, reduce muscle guarding, and decompress irritated nerve tissue. Our FAAOMPT-credentialed therapists bring some of the most advanced manual therapy skills available in the region.
Targeted needling of lumbar and gluteal trigger points to release deep muscle tension and reduce referred pain patterns — often producing immediate relief in patients with chronic muscle-driven back pain.
Strengthening the specific muscles that support your spine — not a generic 'core exercises' program, but a targeted plan based on your assessment findings. This is what makes results last.
Many back pain cases are driven by how people move — not just the structure that's painful. We identify the faulty movement patterns contributing to your pain and retrain them systematically.
For patients with significant soft tissue restriction or scar tissue contributing to their back pain, instrument-assisted and cupping techniques help restore tissue mobility that manual therapy and exercise alone may not fully resolve.
Your first visit is a thorough evaluation — not a rushed 15-minute assessment. We'll take a full history, perform a clinical movement and neurological screen, identify the source of your pain, and in most cases begin hands-on treatment in the same session.
You'll leave with a clear understanding of what's driving your pain and a realistic, individualized plan to address it. No vague advice — a specific plan with honest expectations.
The specific care you need and deserve—all brought together under one practice, all our providers across three locations in
La Crosse and Onalaska are ready to help you.
Acute low back pain — recent onset, no nerve involvement — often resolves significantly within 4–6 visits. Chronic or nerve-related back pain typically requires 8–12 visits. Your therapist will give you an honest, individualized estimate at your evaluation.
In most cases, no — and research consistently shows that MRI findings often don't correlate with pain levels or outcomes. Many people have disc bulges or degeneration on MRI with no pain at all. PT evaluation can identify the source of your pain clinically without imaging. If imaging is warranted, we'll let you know.
For most types of low back pain, no. Complete rest leads to muscle deconditioning and prolongs recovery. Gentle, appropriate movement is almost always better — and your therapist will guide you on exactly what to do and avoid during recovery.
Yes. Chronic back pain often has identifiable, treatable causes that have simply never been properly addressed. We regularly help patients who have had back pain for years — sometimes decades — achieve meaningful, lasting improvement.
Post-surgical rehabilitation is one of the most important phases of spinal recovery. We work alongside your surgeon's protocol and guide your return to full function safely and progressively.
No. Wisconsin is a direct-access state, so you can schedule an appointment without a physician referral. If you plan to use your insurance, a referral may be helpful depending on your specific plan. We accept many major insurance providers—please visit our Insurance page or contact our office for more information about your coverage.
Most patients experience meaningful relief starting with their very first visit. Our team will find the real source of your pain and give you a plan that actually addresses it.
