Ergonomic Assessment in

La Crosse & Onalaska

Identify the workspace and postural factors contributing to your pain — and get practical, lasting solutions.

What Is Ergonomic Assessment?

An ergonomic assessment evaluates how your work environment, workstation setup, and work habits interact with your body — and where that interaction is creating strain, pain, or injury risk. Most workplace pain is not random — it's the predictable result of sustained postures, repetitive movements, or equipment that doesn't fit how your body is built.

Our physical therapists bring clinical expertise in musculoskeletal assessment to the ergonomic evaluation — going beyond generic checklists to understand both your workspace setup and the movement and postural patterns you bring to it.

Conditions and Symptoms We Commonly Treat

Neck pain and upper trapezius tension from desk work

Low back pain from prolonged sitting or standing

Shoulder pain from repetitive overhead or reaching tasks

Wrist, forearm, and elbow pain from keyboard and mouse use

Eye strain and headaches from screen positioning

Hip tightness from prolonged sitting

Occupational injuries and repetitive strain prevention

Return-to-work planning after injury

What to Expect During Treatment

Your assessment can be conducted in-clinic (using a simulation of your workstation) or virtually (reviewing your actual setup via video). Your physical therapist evaluates your chair height, monitor position, keyboard placement, and overall posture during work tasks.

You'll receive a prioritized list of specific, actionable adjustments — to your setup, your habits, and your body — that address the root causes of your workplace pain.

Common Questions, Straight Answers

Can a physical therapist do an ergonomic assessment?

Yes — and physical therapists are often better positioned to do so than generic ergonomic consultants, because we understand both the workstation setup AND the musculoskeletal impact on your body.

Do you come to my workplace?

We primarily offer in-clinic and virtual ergonomic assessments. For corporate or group assessments, contact us at (608) 351-3049 to discuss on-site options.

What do I need to bring or prepare?

For in-clinic: photos or a short video of your actual workstation, and dimensions of your monitor, desk, and chair if available. For virtual: we'll schedule a video call and view your setup live.

Can an ergonomic assessment help if I work standing up?

Absolutely. Standing work environments create their own postural challenges — floor surface, mat use, footwear, monitor height, and shift duration all matter.

Will I need to buy new equipment after my assessment?

Not necessarily. Many of the most impactful changes are free adjustments. When equipment changes are recommended, we prioritize highest-value, lowest-cost options and explain exactly why each one matters.

Your pain at work has a reason — and a solution.

An ergonomic assessment gets to the real source of your workplace pain and gives you specific, practical changes that actually work.
